The second special session of the Texas Legislature begins August 7, 2021. At the top of Gov. Abbott's priorities is re-visiting SB 7 (Hughes) and passing an "election integrity" bill.
SB 7 would have had a chilling effect on the ability to register and vote for many Texan voters with disabilities. What lawmakers come up with now could be a marked improvement over SB 7, or it could be even worse.
Right now, quorum remains broken in the Texas House. While the Senate passed SB 1 (Hughes) earlier in July, nothing will become law until it can be voted on by the lower chamber. The current special session ends August 6, but Gov. Abbott has pledged to continue calling them until the Legislature passes an elections bill.
