Cinema Touching Disability is back for our 19th year, and we're so excited to be holding our Fest in person! Join us at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar this Friday and Saturday, October 14 & 15, for two nights of fantastic disability film, fun, and community.

We've still got space, but tickets are selling fast!

On a bridge with a train rolling by are a pair of dancers. One is in a power chair, and he holds up one hand of the other, who leans back across his knee and lifts one leg high in the air.

Body Shift Collective

Dramatically lit and in front of a dark curtain stands a man flanked by two women, arm in arm, singing or laughing deviously. One leans to side on her cane and all hold champagne glasses.

IMPERFECT, Friday night feature film

Three women lie on a turquoise surface, their heads together and arms swirling in one direction, resembling a kaleidoscopic image. One woman's face is visible and she smiles at the others.

Anjela, short film competition finalist

A figure in a puffy yellow jacket that obscures his face dances on crutches in front of a curving concrete wall. He is suspended on one crutch, one arm and leg wrapped around it, while his other crutch, arm, and leg unwind in front of him.

CRUTCH, Saturday night feature film

Don't miss this year's feature films, short film competition winners, and live performances!

  • Friday evening, come out early for a pre-show dance with Body Shift Collective! They'll be gracing us with a pop-up performance at 5:45 in front of the Drafthouse, before theater doors open at 6.
  • Friday feature film IMPERECT (2021) follows Phamaly, a Denver theatre company for disabled actors, as they mount a production of the legendary musical, Chicago.
  • After Friday's feature, stick around for selections from Austin's own inclusive theater company, TILT Performance Group! Tilt is gearing up for their world premiere of STRANGE FACES on October 29, but you can get a sneak preview of this exciting new musical at Cinema Touching Disability!
  • Saturday feature film CRUTCH (2020) chronicles the gravity defying life of Bill Shannon, an internationally renowned artist, breakdancer and skate punk—on crutches.
  • Saturday evening, meet us back outside the Drafthouse at 5:45 for a pre-show performance by Bill Shannon, star of CRUTCH! Bill will also join us following his film for an audience Q&A.
  • Both nights, catch winning entries from our international short film competition!

About this year's Fest Guests

Bill Shannon (he, him) is an interdisciplinary artist and maker who explores body-centric work through video installation, sculpture, linguistics, sociology, choreography, dance and politics. Bill’s contributions to dance include a very specific movement vocabulary evolved through his creative use of crutches as a child after the discovery of a physical disability that effected his ability to bear weight in his hips. Bill’s subsequent immersion in the emergent youth cultures of hip-hop and skateboarding further contributed to his autodidactic form on crutches.

Body Shift Collective is a community dance performance group that is part of Art Spark Texas’ dance program. It is dedicated to diversity and accessibility and to create daring dance performances. This dance group cultivates choreography through respecting individuality, exploring togetherness, and is advocating for social change through free, public performances with performers of different abilities.

TILT Performance Group envisions a Central Texas where people with disabilities flourish as artists through our mission to shatter disability stereotypes through inclusive theatre. To achieve this mission, we are guided by our values of inclusive theatre, artistic originality, meaningful employment, impactful education, strategic collaborations and fun!
